The Mayflower Compact, Government for the Pilgrims, and Important Indian Leaders
Caroline and Barrett
When the Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth, they were thankful for their safe journey. They praised God for taking them there. In Provincetown Harbor, the Pilgrim’s leaders drew up a plan of government… the Mayflower Compact. Some “strangers” had been talking about going off to a new land, but somehow the other Pilgrims convinced them that everyone must stick together or else all of them might die. Most of the important men who were the right age signed the Compact. They decided to stay and obey whatever laws were made.
Some important Indian leaders were Chief Massasoit, strong and tall with black hair. Samoset had come from the North to visit Massasoit. Samoset liked to talk to Squanto about the white men. Squanto was a very smart guide. Squanto was a happy boy. He went hunting when he was little. When he was older, he was taken to prison. Soon young monks set him FREE!! Squanto wanted everyone to have peace. Squanto was a great Wampanoag.
The Pilgrims didn’t really have a government. They had one or two people for their leader. They did have a governor… and they had a second governer, too.
